Nick's Camp - In Memory of Nick Murcutt

Nick’s Camp is located in Section 1 and has stunning views across the Heavitree Range and Alice Valley and was named in memory of the World Expeditions award winning campsite architect, Nick Murcutt.

Nick, the son of Glenn Murcutt, was an Australian architect who founded the award winning Neeson Murcutt Architects in 2004 with his partner of 16 years, Rachel Neeson. The relationship with World Expeditions began through friendship when Neeson Murcutt Architects shared an office space with World Expeditions in Sydney.

Nick had a passion for camping and uncovering a cultural response to the landscape so the campsite projects were something close to his heart. He drew inspiration for their design from Arnhem Land sleeping platforms and Bedouin tents.

Nick passed away in 2011 after a nine-month battle with cancer and sadly never saw the camps in the field.

At the opening launch of the Larapinta campsite where family, friends, government officials, traditional owners and Nick’s wife and their children gathered – the campsite stood proudly erected and will always remain the legacy of the creative mind of Nick Murcutt.
