Larapinta Trail Frequently Asked Questions

We offer 3 day, 6 day, 9, 12 and 14 day itineraries on the Larapinta Trail. It takes 14 days to walk the Larapinta Trail from End to End. Our 3, 6 and 9 day itineraries take in the most diverse and interesting sections of the trail utilising 4WD transfers between sections.

Our Larapinta Trail trekking season runs from April to September, when trekking conditions are most favourable. For more details, see our When To Go page. Wildflowers are out during the warmer months of April, May and September.

The Larapinta Trail begins in Alice Springs, which is accessible from most capital cities by air, road and/or train. See our Getting There page for more details.

The Larapinta Trail is challenging, but deeply rewarding if you are adequately prepared for the conditions. For our 6 day trek, we recommend preparing with a minimum of 1 hour of aerobic exercise, three to four times a week, including hill walking.

For trekking Larapinta End to End, we recommend 1 hour of aerobic exercise four to five times a week for 3-6 months before departure, and preparing to carry a day pack of up to 8kgs.

See our Fitness page for more details.

Yes. This is essential even for trekkers who are from Australia. Comprehensive travel insurance is a condition of booking for any of our trips.

Your insurance policy should cover cancellation and curtailment, baggage loss or damage, emergency travel, repatriation, and personal accident. Australians travelling domestically should note that travel insurance will not cover medical expenses, therefore you should make your own insurance arrangements to cover these costs (ie. Private health and ambulance cover). It is your own responsibility to ensure that you are fully insured before leaving home.

Many!

Our guided treks remove the hassle of logistics associated with true remote wilderness trekking, allowing you to relax and truly enjoy the landscape. Food and shelter is provided, and the convenience of support vehicles means that you will only need to carry a day pack when out on the trail.

Our guides are the best in the business, with extensive knowledge of the area. It is amazing how many things they will point out to you that you would never have noticed trekking alone. Trekking with a guide can provide a much richer experience, leaving you with a sense of really getting to know the West Macdonnell Ranges.

All of our treks are equipped with appropriate safety equipment including satellite phones.

If you are an experienced walker and prefer the solitude of a self-guided trek, we offer trail head transfers. Please note that the trail is truly remote, with minimal mobile phone coverage. This option should only be considered by well-resourced trekkers with significant wilderness experience.

Information about facilities at our eco-campsites can be found on the 'Our Campsites' page.

Our African-style safari tents accommodate 2 people, and are equipped with stretcher beds and a swag. A pillow and 5cm-thick foam mattress are provided along with your camp bed. Sleeping bags are available for hire.

If you are a solo traveller on our Larapinta End to End trek, you will receive your own tent. On any of our other treks we cannot guarantee that you will receive your own tent, however this service will be provided free of charge if available.

If you are travelling solo and a private tent is unavailable, you will only ever share a tent with a traveller of the same gender.

What you will be required to bring depends on which Larapinta trek you will be taking. See our What to Pack page for more details.

We strongly recommend that you should bring high supported boots with a heavy duty grip. Joggers are not suitable for this walk.

It is recommended that you leave any excess baggage in a secure lock-up at your hotel.

Of course! When we are notified in advance, we are able to cater for a wide range of dietary requirements, allergies and intolerances. Please advise your consultant at the time of booking so that we can do our best to cater to your needs.

Trekkers on our guided walks (including the Larapinta End to End, Best of the Larapinta Trail, Classic Larapinta Trek in Comfort, Larapinta Experience in Comfort and the Larapinta Challenger) must arrive in Alice Springs the day before your trek begins. A pre-tour briefing will be held at the Lone Dingo Store at 3:30pm, and it is essential that you attend this session to prepare for beginning your trek.

No. We are unable to change the time of the briefing, as it is held in the Lone Dingo Store. This is to allow you time to purchase any last minute items you may have forgotten, and time for our guides to pick up any last-minute food items to ensure that any special dietary requirements are met.

The minimum age for children on our Classic Larapinta in Comfort trek is 12 years of age. Children must be fit and active, and be prepared to walk the full tour.

We strongly advise against wearing trainers/sneakers on the trail. The terrain on this trek is rugged, and the Quartzite rocks are famous for shredding even the most trusted old pair of hiking boots. For your comfort, you must have high supported boots with a heavy duty grip.

Not frequently. Sporadic reception can be received depending on your carrier, but generally only for the first day and when on top of Mt Sonder.

For treks accommodated in our semi-permanent campsites, a USB port is available to recharge any batteries or devices. This is a solar powered port, so it may take longer than usual to charge devices.

No. Our guides ensure that all of our food is packed away in containers or in the fridge. We do not encourage interaction with or feeding of wild animals. Attacks of dingos or any other animals is extremely rare.

Yes! You will need to purchase any alcohol for personal consumption the day prior to departure. Please note there is limited capacity for cooling drinks each day, and there is no ice available during this trip.
