How fit do you need to be to trek Larapinta Trail?

Your fitness is perhaps the key ingredient for an enjoyable experience to trek Larapinta Trail. The fitter you are, the more you will enjoy it, and you will have enough energy for extra activities. 

For most guided Larapinta Trail trips you will need to be prepared to carry approximately 5kg of weight over unstable, rocky ground. Practice walking on uneven ground before departure.

This itinerary involves trekking for 3 days, for up to 6 or 7 hours a day, at a steady pace.

As with all of our guided Larapinta treks, you will be carrying of a day pack only - however you should be prepared for potential variable weather conditions. You will need a good level of fitness and should be in good health.

Suggested preparation:

1 hour of aerobic exercise three to four times a week for at least 3 months prior to your departure, plus extended periods of exercise during the weekend. Hill walking with a 5kg pack in variable weather conditions will also help to prepare you for your adventure.

This itinerary involves trekking for 6 days, for up to 6 or 7 hours a day at a steady pace.

As with all of our guided Larapinta treks, you will be carrying of a day pack only - however you should be prepared for potential variable weather conditions. You will need a good level of fitness and should be in good health.

This trek involves 6 – 12 hours walking each day over rugged terrain with some steep ascents and descents. This trek should not be underestimated as it can be tough and challenging. The Larapinta 9 day trek is graded moderate to challenging.

The Larapinta 9 day is a fully supported trek. You will need to carry just a day pack with your water bottles, jacket, camera and other personal items. You should plan on carrying at least 3 litres of water each and every day.

Suggested preparation:

One hour of aerobic type exercise, four to five times a week for three to six months prior to departure. Hill walking with a pack in variable weather conditions will also help to prepare you for your adventure.

This trek involves 6 – 12 hours walking each day over rugged terrain with some steep ascents and descents. This trek should not be underestimated as it can be tough and challenging.

Suggested preparation:

One hour of aerobic type exercise, four to five times a week for three to six months prior to departure. Hill walking with a pack in variable weather conditions will also help to prepare you for your adventure.

This trek involves walking the full 223km of the Larapinta Trail, in variable weather conditions for up to 8 to 10 hours a day (possibly more subject to weather conditions). This will take a total of 14 days.

You will need an excellent level of fitness, be prepared to carry a day pack weighing up to 8kgs and be completely comfortable in adverse weather conditions.

Suggested preparation:

One hour of aerobic type exercise, four to five times a week for three to six months prior to departure. Hill walking with a pack in variable weather conditions will also help to prepare you for your adventure.
