Charlie’s Camp is located in Section 8 below the foothills of the Larapinta Trail’s Counts Point. It is named in honour of pioneering Larapinta guide Charlie Holmes.
Charlie was one of our most loved guides and one of the travel industries most experienced and successful small group adventure leaders. Charlie had enjoyed a successful family and business life before his love of trekking brought him to World Expeditions in 1991. His approach to travel was an extension of his approach to life. He was passionate about the world we live in, enthusiastic, energetic and caring towards those in his charge, and an innovator and an inspiration to those that worked alongside him. Charlie carried a happy energy with him everywhere. In 1995, Charlie had been leading a trek that took place between Uluru and Alice Springs when he came across the Larapinta Trail. He was totally inspired by the West MacDonnell ranges and with this, helped design our 3, 7 and 16 day versions of the Larapinta Trail, that were the first commercial Larapinta itineraries of their kind. Today, the Larapinta operations have grown into one of World Expeditions' best selling destinations and credit must go to Charlie for what has become a program of international award winning notoriety. Based in Alice Springs for his last decade, Charlie mentored and trained many apprentice guides for World Expeditions, so his approach to life and to work has been passed on to several among us and will be cherished by us all forever. Charlie led treks on the Larapinta Trail almost right up to the time when he passed away in 2007 while receiving treatment for cancer.
